Book Nook
And you thought kids didn't remember the little things adults do for them. Amber
Pollitt did.
Pollitt remembered that her grandfather spent lots of time reading to her, and when she
grew up and opened a children's bookstore, she named it in his memory. The store is
Buster's Bookstore at Union Station.
It's a cute little nook on the lower level of the station, behind the escalators and
near the theaters. Buster's Bookstore carries books for kids from birth to about 13
years old, plus bookmarks, finger puppets and greeting cards. It also carries themed
birthday-party kits, with paperware, balloons, candles and such, priced at $25 to
$35. On Saturdays, Buster's presents free puppet shows at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.
Buster's Bookstore is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays,
noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Granddaughter Opens Buster's Bookstore in Union Station
as Tribute to
her Grandfather
Laura Davis,
Science City - Union Station, July, 2000
(Kansas City, MO) - Unions Station's newest retail store celebrates a
grandfather's love of reading to his kids and grandkids. Buster's Bookstore, a
children's bookstore, is a charming addition to the Science City Theater District, located
on the lower level of Union Station, 30 W. Pershing Rd. in Kansas City MO.
Busters's Bookshelf is owned and operated by Amber Pollitt. She
named her store after her grandfather Buster, whose caricature is painted on the front
door of the shop. The walls are filled with murals of Grandpa Buster, children
engrossed in storybooks, and titles of children's literature favorites like Curious
George, Charlottes Web, Dr. Seuss and Madeline. Hand crafted wooden clown furniture
add a whimsical flair to Buster's Bookstore.
You'll find a wide variety of children's books, from treasured classics to
the hottest new releases, like the comical "eyeball books." The store also
features themed party favors, stuffed animals and greeting cards. Handmade puppets
can be found throughout the store. On Saturdays Buster's presents free puppet shows
and storytelling at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.
This is the first business venture for 25 -year-old owner, Amber Pollitt
of Olathe, KS. She spent the last three years working for the Kansas School for the
Deaf. "I wanted to start my own business and I love working with children, so I
thought "Science City" would be the ideal spot for a children's book
store," Pollitt said. In the near future she hopes to offer visual story
telling at Buster's for hearing impaired children.

What I like best is a book that's at least funny once in a while...What
really nocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author
that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone
whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.
